 Abstract

This study investigated the effect of cooperative learning methods on academic performance in Tourism Education among secondary school students in Cross River State. The study also investigated the interactive effect of teaching methods and sex on students’ academic performance in Tourism Education. The study adopted quasi-experimental research design and the sample for the study comprised 114 students (55 students for the experimental group while 59 students formed the control group). Data for the study was collected using Achievement Test in Tourism Education. The validity of the instrument was done with the assistance of two research experts and examiners/teachers of tourism education while the reliability of the instrument was done through trial testing using 50 students selected from one secondary school in the study area but were not part of the study sample and data collected was analysed using Kuder-Richardson 20 coefficient of internal consistency formula which gave a coefficient index of 0 .84. The students were grouped into two groups on the basis of the schools and a pre-test was carried out by the researcher and for controlling the effect of teacher quality both  groups were taught by the researcher herself for a period of eight weeks after which the post-test was administered to the students in the two groups. The data collected were analysed using Independent t-test, Analysis of Covariance. The results were tested at 0 .05 level of significance. The result of the analysis revealed that cooperative learning had significant positive effect on students’ academic performance in Tourism Education but the interactive effect of teaching methods and sex on students’ academic performance in Tourism Education was not statistically significant. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended among others that teachers should be encouraged to use cooperative instructional method to teach Tourism Education and in service training in the form of workshops, conferences, seminars should be organized by the government to equip teachers to incorporate cooperative learning instructional method keeping in mind the end goal to furnish educators with advanced instructional techniques.
